Before the Academy

In the year of 1159, Lyraa Sparrow was born to two mages, Vega and Delphinius, in the small lake town of Danu, ****up in the Oghma mountains within the Adrestian Empires borders. Vega and Delphinius were high ranking mages within Eridanus, a coven of powerful mages who specialise in rare a reason magic form, water. Eridanus would take care of Danu’s water sources and ensure they were clean and they also, reluctantly, provided clean drinking water to the citizens of Danu. The members of Eridanus were very secretive about their magic as they believed water can both give live, and take it away. As such only a select few mages knew how to teach water magic. Many scholars and officials were baffled by the exceedingly clear and clean water sources that could be found in Danu and during droughts many territories try to barter with Danu for their drinking water. Eridanus were picky with who they shared their water with, despite the water sources seemingly never ending supply, and this would be a source of contention between them and the Mayor of Danu, Deneb, who wished to create a trade deal with the Empire. As such, Danu was not a very profitable town, however it was a place where most are healthy thanks to the clean water. Danu had a rich ecosystem thanks to the mages of Eridanus who also took care of the environment, ensuring that vegetation grew well and animals were allowed to flourish naturally.

Lyraa grew up in the Eridanus coven and as such she was very conscious of the natural environment and wildlife. Lyraa learnt the secret of the water magic from her parents, and she helped them share clean drinking water to the people of Danu from a young age. Lyraa developed a strong connection to the environment and especially animals. She spent her childhood playing in the lakeside forest and she would offer clean water to the animals living there. She wouldn’t often play with other children, preferring the company of animals and exhibited peculiar behaviours that her parents dismissed as a quirky personality. She mostly kept to herself and would spend long hours playing and drawing in the forest. In her younger years Lyraa was mostly well behaved so didn’t raise too many concerns for her parents, the members of Eridanus or those in her town. She developed an interest in the night sky and would spend hours staring up into the sky, watching the stars twinkle. As Lyraa got older, her peculiarities became more apparent. Lyraa had started to bring insects home and kept them in jars and tubs. All she talked about were stars, insects, drawing or her most favourite topic, cats. She began to refuse most food and would be especially sensitive to certain stimuli. But so long as her parents accepted her restricted behaviour, Lyraa would be happy, and at least she wasn't getting into trouble. The mages of Eridanus doted on Lyraa and encouraged her quirky habits but the villagers of Danu found Lyraas antics too odd and they would keep their distance from her out of fear. Lyraa had a problem recognising people, and others would get mad that she couldn’t remember their names or faces but would talk at length about her interests. Eventually some of the children began to bully Lyraa for her eccentricities. Lyraa started to withdraw herself and wouldn’t interact with people of her town much outside of her tasks helping Eridanus.

Shortly before Lyraas 11th birthday, Adrestia experienced strong heatwaves that lasted months and resulted in droughts all over the Empire. This period was known as The Great Drought of Adrestia. Only Danu was left with their clear, drinkable water sources and the Empire soon sent an official to investigate and seek help. The official they sent would be Ludwig Von Aegir who brought his family along for the visit. Ludwig first met with Deneb and attempted negotiations with him to share the secrets of the water magic, but was unsuccessful as Deneb did not know how the magic was performed. He had however promise a meeting with the leaders of Eridanus who would know more. However this call for aid caused the members of Eridanus to experience some conflicting opinions. Some members believed the water should be shared with the Empire but others wanted to protect the water. Some wanted gold for the water whilst others thought they should give the water freely. It was during this time that Lyraa had her first experience with nobles. All of them were rude to her and they treated her poorly. All except for one boy who, whilst loud, was very polite. She saw their greed and how Ludwig hounded members of her coven for their secrets. They carried elaborate hand fans and parasols to keep them shaded and cool. During one of the most unbearably hot days, Lyraa was out in the lakeside forest. She almost fainted due to the heat but the noble boy happened across her and he carried her back to her home. He fanned her and wouldn’t leave her side until Vega came to her aid. Feeling indebted to Ludwig, the mages of Eridanus finally decided to agree to a meeting. As a parting gift, the boy gifted Lyraa his hand fan. Vega and Delphinus were shocked by the gesture and they would never let Lyraa forget this kindness. They were of the opinion that Eridanus should sell the water to the Empire and they considered the boys kindness as a good omen. The boy would later be scolded for been so brazen about giving strange young girls gifts, but Ludwig soon let the matter go when the high ranking mages of Eridanus and Deneb finally agreed to a meeting. It was not as successful as Ludwig and Deneb had hoped, but they all agreed to a temporary trade of the clean drinking water for gold. Eridanus mages would prepare the water and store it in barrels, Deneb would see to the paper work, and receive the gold, and Ludwig would arrange for the transit and dispersal of the water filled barrels across the Empire. That year Danu Water was shipped off to all corners of the Empire, and how the water was kept abundant and clean was still a secret held closely by the members of Eridanus. Deneb was unhappy that the trade deal would only be temporary and that the secrets were unknown but he decided to focus on that acquisition at a later date and when the drought came to an end Ludwig turned his focus onto other endeavours.

After that, people from all over Adrestia would come to Danu to barter for the water, which by all acounts tasted really good, but the mages of Eridanus couldn't agree amongst themselves on how to proceed, so no further deals were made for the water. From Danu's new popularity, many people of interest would visit. Lyraa would watch people from a distance and see different types of magic there was. She wanted to learn them all, but her skills were limited due to having little experience. She seeked the aid of the Eradanus coven, but they were unwilling to teach her. She would continue to collect insects and her parents wished she helped out with the coven more instead of playing with bugs. In her late teenage years Lyraa had started to distance herself from the mages of Eridanus as she found the constant arguments over what to do with the increased number of visitors in Danu frustraiting. She couldn't understand why they couldn't agree to share the water with the whole of Adrestia. She also couldn't understand why some of the members wanted gold, having seen how gold corrupted the nobles who had also started to visit Danu in higher frequencies. One particular day, Lyraa was ranting to some squirrels in the forest about her dissatisfaction with Eridanus, and she was overheard by a man named Cy. He claimed to be a monk from Garreg Mach, which was closely situated to the east of Danu. It wasn’t unheard of that monks from Garreg Mach would visit Danu so Lyraa had no reason to doubt the man, and he treated her kindly and listened to her as she complained. He asked to see her perform a spell and she obliged. Lyraa opened up to Cy that she wanted to learn new forms of magic and he informed her of a very rare, new type of magic that might be of interest to her, dark magic. He told her she could learn more about it if she enrolled at Garreg Mach but that the tuition fee was expensive. Lyraa decided right then that she wanted to attend the school and she aimed to raise funds for her enrolment. She finally understood the value of gold.

Lyraa took up a job working on a honey farm, much to her parents surprise. They didn’t care that her job involved bugs, they were just happy she was finally applying herself to something they thought was useful. She was great at caring for the bees, but her skills with the flowers were lacking. The older couple, Cephei and Vul, who owned the bee farm loved Lyraa despite her clumsiness and lack of skill with the flowers. Lyraa worked there for three years and the bees thrived. Lyraa developed a love for honey that the bees produced and she got better tending to the flowers. She descovered about the beneficial properties of honey, such as an ingredient in salves and recipes. Every few months off she would meet with Cy and they would chat about whatever was on Lyraa's mind. He would occasionally try to steer the conversation towards the coven of Eridanus and the secrets of water magic. Initially Lyraa was secretive about the magic and eventually she admitted she just simply didn’t know how or why she could use water magic, just that she could. Eventually she saved up enough for the tuition fee and she applied right away. She waited in the forest to tell Cy of her good news but he didn’t show up. She decided it didn’t matter, she would just tell him when she arrived at the monastery.
